The path in one paragraph

A boy in a kufi making dua on a prayer mat while his Islamic Studies teacher smiles on a laptop

The short answer: most children start with the Noorani Qaida to learn the letters and how to read them, move on to reading the Quran itself (Nazra) with Tajweed, and then — if the family wants — begin memorising (Hifz). Islamic Studies runs alongside every stage, so your child learns duas, salah and good manners as they go.

Children do not all start at the beginning. The teacher checks your child's level in the first free class and starts them at the right stage.

The stages at a glance

Timings vary a lot from child to child. These are typical for a child with regular weekly classes:

1. Noorani QaidaArabic letters, letter shapes, joining, vowel signs (harakat), sukoon, shaddah, tanween, long vowels and early Tajweed6–12 monthsRead new Arabic words letter by letter, correctly, without help
2. Nazra (Quran reading)Reading from the Quran itself, usually starting with the short surahs, building speed and fluencyDepends on classes per week and practiceRead any page of the Quran steadily and accurately
3. TajweedRules of recitation taught as the child reads: noon and meem rules, madd, qalqalah, stopping signs and articulation pointsBuilt into reading, then refinedRecite with correct pronunciation and the main Tajweed rules
4. Hifz (optional)Memorising surahs and juz with daily revision; 45-minute classes on the same plansOngoingRecite memorised surahs from memory, with Tajweed, and keep them revised

Stage 1: Noorani Qaida

A boy in a kufi pointing at his Noorani Qaida while his teacher guides him on a laptop

Our teachers prefer the Noorani Qaida for beginners. It teaches reading in small, logical steps — first the letters on their own, then joined, then with vowel signs — so that by the end a child can read any Arabic word in the Quran, not just the ones they have memorised.

Most children take 6 to 12 months to finish it. Rushing this stage is the most common reason children struggle later, so the teacher moves on only when each lesson is secure.

Stage 2 and 3: Reading the Quran with Tajweed

Once the Qaida is done, your child starts reading from the Quran itself. Many begin with the short surahs of the last juz, which they may already know by heart, then move through the Quran page by page.

Tajweed is not a separate course bolted on at the end. The teacher corrects pronunciation and applies the rules as your child reads, then fills in the rules more fully once reading is fluent.

Stage 4: Hifz, if your family wants it

A proud boy hugging the Quran while his Hifz teacher smiles on a laptop

Memorising the Quran is optional and not for every child. Some children start with short surahs alongside reading; others begin full Hifz once they read fluently. Hifz classes are 45 minutes, on the same monthly plans, so there is time for new lines and for revision.

Alongside every stage: Islamic Studies

Reading the Quran is only part of growing up as a Muslim. Islamic Studies is taught alongside, at your child's level:

  • The kalimas and their meanings
  • Everyday duas — eating, sleeping, travelling
  • Wudu and how to pray salah
  • Stories of the prophets
  • The life of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (seerah)
  • Islamic manners at home and with others

Books and materials

All learning materials are included, so there is nothing to buy before you start. Beginners use the Noorani Qaida, and the teacher shares each lesson page on screen. If you would like a printed copy at home, any clear Noorani Qaida is fine — ask the teacher and they will tell you which pages your child is on.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

At what age can my child start the curriculum?
Many children start the Noorani Qaida from about age 4 or 5, with short, gentle lessons. Older children and teenagers start at whatever stage fits their reading.
How long does it take to finish the Noorani Qaida?
Most children take 6 to 12 months, depending on their age, how many classes they have a week and how much they practise in between.
Does my child have to do Hifz?
No. Hifz is optional. Many families focus on fluent reading with Tajweed and memorise the short surahs needed for salah.
Do I need to buy books?
No. All learning materials are included. The teacher shares the lesson on screen in every class.
My child already reads a little. Do they start from the beginning?
No. The teacher checks their reading in the first free class and starts them at the right point, revising only what needs fixing.
What do your classes cost?
Plans start at $30 a month (£24, €28) for one 30-minute one-to-one class a week, with no registration fee and all learning materials included. Siblings get a 10% family discount from the second child, and the first 3 classes are free with no card needed.
