What Nazra means

A smiling girl in a pink hijab reading the Quran on a rehal while her female teacher listens on a tablet

Nazra (also written Nazrah or Nazira) is the word many families from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh use for reading the Quran by looking at it — as opposed to Hifz, reciting it from memory. A child who has finished the Noorani Qaida moves on to Nazra, starting with the short surahs and working through the mushaf.

The goal of Nazra is simple: to read any page of the Quran correctly and smoothly, with the right sounds and the basic Tajweed rules applied. It is the step that comes before memorisation, and many families also call finishing it a child's first khatam.

Where Nazra fits

Most children follow the same path. Your teacher places your child at the right step in the first free class.

  • 1. Noorani Qaida — Arabic letters, sounds and joining
  • 2. Nazra — reading the Quran from the mushaf, page by page
  • 3. Tajweed — polishing recitation with the full rules
  • 4. Hifz — memorising, for children who want to go on

See how your child gets on — the first 3 classes are free.

How our Nazra classes work

Illustration of monthly tests and progress reports

Each class is a live 30-minute one-to-one lesson over Zoom, Google Meet or Skype. The teacher shares the page on screen and your child reads aloud for most of the lesson. Every wrong letter, missed madd or rushed stop is heard and corrected straight away, so mistakes do not settle into habits — the main risk when a child reads alone or in a busy group.

At the end of the lesson the teacher tells you what was covered and what to practise, so a few minutes of reading at home before the next class keeps the progress steady.

  • Your child reads aloud for most of every class
  • Mistakes corrected on the spot, word by word
  • Basic Tajweed applied while reading
  • Same teacher every week, so progress is tracked

Taught in English — or Urdu if you prefer

Lessons are taught in English, which most children growing up in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia and Europe follow best. If your child (or a grandparent sitting in) is more comfortable in Urdu, ask when you book and we will try to arrange an Urdu-speaking teacher.

How long Nazra takes

It depends on where your child starts, their age and how many classes a week they take. We do not promise a finishing date before hearing your child read. After the free classes, the teacher gives you an honest estimate based on your child's pace.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Nazra Quran?
Nazra is reading the Quran by looking at it, from the mushaf, as opposed to Hifz (reciting from memory). It is the stage after Noorani Qaida.
Does my child need to finish the Qaida before Nazra?
Usually, yes. A child should recognise the letters, harakat and joining before reading from the mushaf. If you are not sure, the teacher checks your child's level in the first free class.
Is Nazra the same as Tajweed?
Not quite. Nazra is learning to read the Quran fluently and correctly, with the basic Tajweed rules applied as you read. A Tajweed course goes deeper into the full rules once a student reads well.
Can the classes be taught in Urdu?
Lessons are taught in English by default. Ask when you book and we will try to arrange an Urdu-speaking teacher.
Can my daughter have a female teacher?
Yes. Choose a male or female teacher when you book; the fee is the same.
What does it cost?
Plans start at $39 a month (£30, €36) for 8 one-to-one 30-minute classes. There is no registration fee and a 10% family discount applies from the second child.
