Why language matters in a Quran class

An open Quran showing the Arabic text

Many children growing up abroad understand little Urdu or Arabic. If the teacher explains in a language the child only half follows, the child copies sounds without understanding the instructions — and quietly loses confidence.

Our classes are taught in English. The teacher explains each letter, rule and correction in words your child understands, and checks they have followed before moving on.

What changes for an English-speaking child

Three smiling children, two girls in hijab and a boy in a kufi, reading the Quran on rehals together

The Arabic of the Quran is the same for everyone. What changes is how it is explained:

  • Instructions and corrections given in plain English
  • Arabic sounds compared with English sounds where that helps — and taught carefully where English has no equivalent
  • Meanings of short surahs and duas explained in English
  • Islamic Studies taught in English, so your child can talk about their faith at school

See how your child gets on — the first 3 classes are free.

Sounds English speakers find hard

A smiling boy pointing at Arabic letters while his Noorani Qaida teacher waves from a laptop

Some Arabic letters do not exist in English, so children tend to replace them with the closest English sound. A one-to-one teacher hears this immediately and fixes it before it becomes a habit:

  • ع ('ayn) and ح (ḥa) from the throat
  • ق (qaf) compared with ك (kaf)
  • The heavy letters ص ض ط ظ
  • ث and ذ (th sounds), and خ and غ

Urdu if you prefer it

English is the default, but if your child or your family would rather learn in Urdu, ask when you book and we will try to arrange it.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Are the classes taught in English?
Yes. All classes are taught in English by default. Urdu is available on request.
My child knows no Arabic at all. Is that a problem?
No. Complete beginners start with the Noorani Qaida — the Arabic letters and their sounds — and every step is explained in English.
Will my child learn the meaning of what they read?
The teacher explains the meaning of the short surahs and duas your child learns. For deeper understanding, older children can take Quran with translation or Quranic Arabic.
What does it cost?
Plans start at $39 a month (£30, €36) for 8 one-to-one classes, with no registration fee and all materials included. Siblings get a 10% family discount from the second child, and the first 3 classes are free.
