Tajweed vs Quran Reading — What's the Difference?

Reading the Quran means being able to read the Arabic text. Tajweed means reading it correctly, the way it was revealed. Here is how they fit together, and where your child should start.

Quran reading: being able to read the text

Learning to read the Quran means recognising the Arabic letters, the vowel signs and how letters join, and reading words and lines from the mushaf. Beginners usually start with the Noorani Qaida and then move on to reading from the Quran itself.

At this stage the focus is accuracy and fluency: reading without stopping on every word, and without mixing up similar letters.

Tajweed: reading it correctly

Tajweed is the set of rules for reciting the Quran correctly: where each letter is pronounced from (makharij), the qualities of the letters, how long to stretch certain sounds (madd), the nasal sound (ghunnah), the rules of noon and meem saakin, and where to stop and start.

Without Tajweed, a reader can change the sound of a word — and sometimes its meaning. That is why scholars encourage every Muslim to learn at least the basic rules.

Which comes first?

In practice they are learned together. A good teacher corrects pronunciation from the very first Qaida lesson, so basic Tajweed is built in from the start. Once a student reads the Quran fluently, a dedicated Tajweed course goes deeper into the rules and polishes the recitation.

  • Cannot read Arabic yet → start with Noorani Qaida
  • Can read slowly or with mistakes → Quran Reading, with Tajweed applied as you read
  • Reads fluently but wants it to be correct → Tajweed course
  • Wants to memorise → Hifz, with Tajweed corrected throughout

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can my child learn Tajweed before reading fluently?
The basic rules, yes — a good teacher corrects pronunciation from the first lesson. The detailed rules make more sense once your child reads fluently.
Is Tajweed only for advanced students?
No. Basic Tajweed is for everyone who reads the Quran. Advanced Tajweed is for students who want to perfect their recitation.
How do I know which course my child needs?
Book the free classes. The teacher hears your child read in the first lesson and recommends where to start.
What do your classes cost?
Plans start at $39 a month (£30, €36) for 8 one-to-one classes, with no registration fee and all materials included. Siblings get a 10% family discount from the second child, and the first 3 classes are free.
