The hardest part is asking

Most people who take shahada find the community welcoming and the practical learning almost impossible to arrange. Classes at the masjid assume knowledge you do not have. Videos online answer the question after the one you wanted to ask. And there is a limit to how many times you feel able to ask the same brother or sister to explain wudu again.

A private class solves the specific problem: one teacher, one student, and no audience. You can ask the basic question, the repeated question, and the question you are embarrassed by, and nothing about the class changes.

Where you start

Usually two things at once. The Noorani Qaida gives you the Arabic letters and their sounds so that recitation stops being guesswork — and it is designed for complete beginners, which is exactly what you are, not a compromise.

Alongside it, the practical basics: the words of Salah and what they mean, wudu, the daily duas, and enough of the meaning of what you recite that it is not just sounds. Which of the two moves faster is your choice.

  • The Arabic alphabet, from the first letter
  • Salah, word by word, with meanings
  • Wudu and the daily practicalities
  • The short surahs, and what they say

See how your child gets on — the first 3 classes are free.

Taught in English, by somebody expecting a beginner

Everything is explained in English. Terms are defined the first time they are used rather than assumed. You choose a male or female teacher when you book, at the same fee, and you can change teacher at any time if the fit is wrong.

You will not be told a timeline you cannot meet. Most reverts learning at two classes a week are reading short words within a couple of months, but the honest answer is that the teacher will estimate after hearing you, not before.

Going at your own speed, including slowly

Classes are 30 minutes and run seven days a week. Two a week is enough to make real progress; one a week still moves. If a month is difficult, pause it — we will stop the billing rather than charge you for lessons you did not attend, and the place is held.

The first three classes are free and no card is taken, so you can find out whether this format works for you before any money is involved.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

I know absolutely nothing. Is that a problem?
No — it is the situation the Noorani Qaida was designed for. Your teacher will start at the first letter and will not assume anything you have not told them.
Can I ask questions that are not about the Quran?
Yes, and most new Muslims do — about Salah, about wudu, about practicalities at home or at work. Where a question needs a scholar rather than a teacher, you will be told that honestly rather than given a guess.
Can I have a female teacher?
Yes, or a male teacher — say which when you book. The fee is identical and you can change at any time.
Do I need to be able to read Arabic script at all?
No. That is what the first course teaches. Nothing before it is assumed.
How much does it cost?
Plans start at $39 a month for two 30-minute classes a week and the full table is published on the fees page. The first three classes are free and no card is taken during them.
