Shy is not the same as slow

Three smiling children, two girls in hijab and a boy in a kufi, reading the Quran on rehals together

Parents of quiet children often hear the same thing from a weekend class: lovely child, but she does not say much. What that usually means is that she has spent most of each session listening to louder children read, waiting for a turn that came late or not at all, and then reading so softly that nobody could correct her.

None of that tells you how well a shy child can learn. Many quiet children are careful listeners who notice small differences in sound — exactly the skill good recitation needs. What holds them back is the setting, not the ability. Change the setting and the picture often changes quickly.

Why a one-to-one class suits a quiet child

Illustration of a one-to-one online Quran class

In a private online class there is nobody to compare themselves with and nobody to overhear a mistake. The teacher is listening to one voice, so even a whisper gets heard, and the child does not have to fight for attention to be noticed.

There is also no gap between reading and feedback. In a group, a shy child who gets a letter wrong may never be told, because the teacher did not hear it. One-to-one, the correction comes straight away and quietly, and the child learns that being corrected is a normal part of every lesson rather than a public moment.

  • No classmates watching or listening
  • Every quiet answer is actually heard
  • Corrections given gently, as they happen
  • The same teacher every week, so trust can build

What the first few classes look like

The teacher does not start by asking your child to read a page aloud. The first class is mostly about getting comfortable: a greeting, a few easy questions, and a short piece of reading at a level the child can manage. If your child would rather point to letters or repeat after the teacher before reading alone, that is a perfectly good start.

You are welcome to sit right beside your child for the free classes and for as long afterwards as they need. Many parents of shy children sit in for the first few weeks, then move to the other side of the room, then to the next room with the door open. Let your child set that pace.

Small things that help at home

A shy child relaxes faster when the class feels predictable. A few simple habits make a real difference:

  • Keep the same day, time and seat every week
  • Set the laptop up before the class so there is no last-minute rush
  • Use headphones if siblings or the television make your child self-conscious
  • Tell the teacher what your child enjoys, so there is something easy to talk about
  • Praise effort after the class, not just how much they read
  • Avoid asking your child to recite for relatives until they offer to

Choosing the right teacher for a quiet child

Illustration of male and female Quran teachers

Some shy children open up more with a female teacher, especially younger children and girls; others are fine with either. You choose male or female when you book, and the fee is the same. If after a few weeks your child still is not comfortable, tell us and we will change the teacher at no cost. You do not need to explain why.

Keeping the same teacher every week matters more for a shy child than for most. Each week starts where the last one finished, with someone who already knows how your child likes to be spoken to.

Try it without any commitment

The first three classes are free and no card is taken. Classes are 30 minutes and run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so you can choose a calm time of day rather than squeezing it in when your child is tired. Watch how your child responds over those three classes before deciding anything.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

My child barely speaks to adults they do not know. Will this work?
Often, yes, but not necessarily on day one. The teacher will not push your child to talk before they are ready, and you can sit beside them. Most of the early progress is in getting comfortable; the reading follows once the child trusts the teacher.
Does my child have to turn their camera on?
For children, it helps the teacher to see the page and how your child is following along, so we suggest having it on. If your child is very nervous at first, talk to the teacher about easing into it.
Can I stay in the room for every class?
Yes. You can sit in on any class without telling us first, for as long as your child wants you there.
What if my child does not get on with the teacher?
Tell us and we will move your child to a different teacher at no cost. You can also ask for a female or male teacher at any point; the fee does not change.
Is a group class better for building confidence?
For some children, later on. For a shy beginner, a group usually means less reading time and fewer corrections. Many parents start one-to-one so the child builds skill and confidence first, and the social side comes more easily afterwards.
