What your child learns first
The alphabet, but properly: not just the twenty-eight names, but the sound each letter makes and where in the mouth it is made. Then the part that trips up most children learning from a book at home — that a letter looks different at the start, in the middle and at the end of a word, and the same as itself when it stands alone.
After that come the short vowels, sukoon and shadda, and joining letters into real words. Children usually reach recognisable words within the first term.

Quranic Arabic and spoken Arabic are not the same thing
Parents often ask for one and mean the other. Quranic Arabic is about understanding what is recited — the vocabulary that repeats most often across the Quran, and enough grammar to follow an ayah without a translation beside you. Spoken Arabic is about conversation, and differs enormously between Egypt, the Levant and the Gulf.
Both start from the same alphabet, so the first months look identical. Tell the teacher which one you are aiming at and the vocabulary chosen from that point will follow it.

If your child is learning to read the Quran, the Noorani Qaida already teaches the letters and their pronunciation, and Arabic classes on top of that add meaning rather than repeating the same ground. Many families run one Arabic class a week alongside two Quran classes.
If your child has not started the Quran yet, either is a reasonable starting point, and the teacher will recommend one after the first free class.

Frequently asked questions
What age can my child start Arabic?
Around five, once they can sit and focus for half an hour and are comfortable with letters in their own first language. Younger than that, the Noorani Qaida is usually the better entry point.
Will my child learn to speak Arabic or to understand the Quran?
Whichever you choose — tell the teacher at the start. The first months are the same either way, and the vocabulary diverges after that.
Do you teach in English?
Yes. Explanations are in English, which is what most children in the USA, UK, Canada and Australia follow best. Urdu can sometimes be arranged on request.
Is this the same as the Noorani Qaida?
No. The Qaida teaches you to pronounce and read Arabic script so you can recite the Quran. Arabic classes go further into meaning, vocabulary and grammar. They overlap at the beginning and separate quickly.
