When is Eid al-Fitr 2027?

Eid al-Fitr is on 1 Shawwal, the day after Ramadan ends. In 2027 it is expected on Tuesday 9 March if the new moon is seen on the evening of Monday 8 March, or on Wednesday 10 March if Ramadan completes 30 days.

All dates are expected dates. They depend on the sighting of the moon and can be a day earlier or later in your country or community — follow your local mosque's announcement.

Before Eid: Zakat al-Fitr

Zakat al-Fitr is a small charity paid for every member of the family, children included, before the Eid prayer, so that people in need can celebrate too. It is a lovely thing to involve children in: let them hand over the family's payment or put it in the box themselves, and explain who it helps.

Eid sunnahs children can learn

Small, practical sunnahs make Eid feel special and give children something to do:

  • Take a bath (ghusl) and wear their best clothes
  • Eat something sweet — the Prophet ﷺ ate dates — before going to the Eid prayer
  • Say the Eid takbeer on the way: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illallah, wallahu akbar, Allahu akbar, wa lillahil hamd
  • Go to the prayer one way and come home a different way
  • Greet people with “Taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum” — may Allah accept from us and from you
  • Visit family, and remember people who are alone

After Eid: keep the Ramadan habit

The six fasts of Shawwal and a steady Quran routine are the best way to hold on to what Ramadan built. For children, that usually means keeping their Quran class going at the same time every week.
