The short answer: a well-qualified male or female teacher can both teach your child to read and memorize the Quran properly, so the teacher's skill, patience and way with children matter most. That said, many families prefer a female teacher for young children and for girls, especially as they get older, while some prefer a male teacher for boys or for advanced Hifz. Choose based on your child's personality and your family's comfort, try a few classes, and change if it is not working.
Here are the things worth thinking about before you choose.
Start with what actually matters: the teacher
Gender is only one part of the picture. Whoever you choose, look for a teacher who:
- Recites correctly and corrects mistakes clearly.
- Is patient and warm with children, not sharp or impatient.
- Lets your child read for most of the lesson rather than lecturing.
- Keeps in touch with you about progress.
- Is reliable and on time.
A great male teacher is better for your child than a poor female teacher, and the reverse is just as true. Our guide on how to choose an online Quran teacher for your child goes into these qualities in detail.
Three things to weigh up

Your child's age
Very young children often settle more easily with a female teacher, partly because most of the adults in their early learning, at nursery and primary school, are women, and a soft, encouraging style feels familiar. That is a tendency, not a rule; plenty of small children do wonderfully with a gentle male teacher.
As children grow, other considerations come in. Many families prefer their daughters to have a female teacher, particularly from around the age of puberty, for reasons of modesty and comfort. Some families prefer their sons to learn with a male teacher as they get older, especially if they are aiming for Hifz or want a role model in recitation. These are family choices, and any of them is reasonable.
Your child's personality
Think about how your child responds to adults in general:
- Shy or anxious children often open up more with a teacher whose manner is gentle and unhurried. For many, that is a female teacher, though not always.
- Lively, energetic children sometimes respond well to a teacher with a clear, firm structure, whether male or female.
- Children who have had a bad experience with a strict teacher before may need a fresh start with someone very different.
If you are not sure, ask your child. Even a young child can often tell you whether they would feel more comfortable with a brother or a sister teaching them.
Your family's preferences
Some families have a clear view based on their own understanding of modesty, their culture or how they were taught. Others have no preference at all. Both are fine. The important thing is that you, as the parent, are comfortable, because you will be the one sitting in on classes, talking with the teacher and supporting practice at home.
If you or your partner will often be the one sitting with your child during class, it is also reasonable to consider who you would feel most comfortable speaking to regularly.
Siblings and mixed families
Families with several children often end up with a mix: a female teacher for the younger ones and a daughter, and a male teacher for an older son. That is completely normal. Each child can have the teacher who suits them best. For more on organising classes for several children, see Quran learning for siblings of different ages.
Safety, whichever you choose

Whatever the teacher's gender, the safeguards should be the same. Sit in on early classes, keep the device in a shared room, make sure classes happen on the agreed platform, and know that you can join any lesson without notice. Our checklist on whether online Quran classes are safe for children covers this in more detail.
Try it and adjust
You do not have to get this right first time. Book a trial with the teacher you think will suit, watch how your child responds, and be ready to switch. Signs the match is working: your child looks forward to class, speaks up confidently, and talks about the teacher at home. Signs it is not: dread before class, very quiet answers, or looking to you rather than the teacher, week after week.
