The short answer: sit in on the trial, watch how much your child reads aloud and how mistakes are corrected, and ask clear questions about teachers, fees, contracts and progress. A good academy answers them all happily.

What to watch during the lesson

  • Who is talking? Your child should be reading aloud for most of the lesson, not listening to the teacher talk.
  • Are mistakes corrected straight away? Gently, clearly, and until the child gets it right.
  • Does the teacher check your child's level first? A good first lesson starts by listening.
  • How does your child feel afterwards? Comfortable and a little proud is a good sign.

Questions about the teacher

  • 1. What are the teacher's qualifications, and how long have they been teaching?
  • 2. Will my child have the same teacher every week?
  • 3. Can I choose a male or female teacher, and does it cost more?
  • 4. If my child does not get on with the teacher, can we change — and is there a charge?

Questions about the classes

  • 5. How long is each class, and how many a week do you suggest for my child?
  • 6. Can I watch any lesson, and does anyone check teaching quality?
  • 7. How will I know my child is making progress?
  • 8. What happens if we miss a class, travel or need a different time in Ramadan?

Questions about fees

  • 9. What is the monthly fee, and is it published anywhere?
  • 10. Is there a registration fee or anything else to pay?
  • 11. Is there a contract or minimum term? How do we stop?
  • 12. Is there a discount for siblings?

How we answer them

Our teachers are named on the site with their qualifications and years of experience. Your child keeps the same teacher, you choose male or female for the same fee, and you can change teacher any time for free. Classes are 30 minutes (45 for Hifz), you can sit in on any lesson, and every class is supervised. Fees start at $39 a month with no registration fee and no contract, and siblings get 10% off from the second child.
