When Is It Time to Change Your Child's Quran Teacher?

The short answer: change teacher if your child has made little progress for a couple of months, dreads every class, or is not being corrected properly. But first talk to the teacher — many problems are fixed by a change of pace, time or approach.

Signs it may be time to change

  • No real progress for two months or more, even with regular classes and some practice at home.
  • Your child dreads every lesson, not just the odd one.
  • Mistakes are not corrected, or are corrected harshly.
  • The teacher talks more than your child reads.
  • Frequent late starts, cancellations or distractions during class.
  • Your child would simply learn better with a different personality — calmer, firmer, or of a different gender.

Signs it might just be a rough patch

  • Exams, illness, a new baby or a move at home.
  • A hard stage in the course, such as the transition from Qaida to the mushaf.
  • Tiredness because of the class time, not the teacher.

In these cases, changing the time, slowing the pace for a few weeks, or adding a quick-win goal like a short surah usually helps more than a new teacher.

Talk to the teacher first

Tell the teacher what you are seeing. A good teacher welcomes it, and will often suggest something you had not considered: going back a step to rebuild confidence, more revision, or a different style of lesson. Give it two or three weeks.

How to switch without losing progress

  • Ask for a short handover: where your child is in the course, what they find hard, what works.
  • Keep the same class time if it suits your family, so only one thing changes.
  • Tell your child positively: a new teacher is a fresh start, not a punishment.
  • Sit in on the first lesson with the new teacher.

Frequently asked questions

Will changing teacher set my child back?
Not if it is done well. A short handover and a new teacher who listens first means your child carries on from where they are.
How long should we give a new teacher?
Usually three or four weeks of regular classes is enough to see whether the fit is right.
