The short answer: Surah Al-Kahf ("The Cave") is the 18th surah of the Quran, with 110 verses, running across the 15th and 16th juz. It tells four stories: the young people of the cave, the man with two gardens, Prophet Musa and Al-Khidr, and Dhul-Qarnayn. Many Muslims read it every Friday, and memorising its first ten verses is a well-known protection.
Why Muslims read it on Friday
In narrations recorded by Al-Hakim and Al-Bayhaqi, the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever reads Surah Al-Kahf on Friday will have a light shining for them between the two Fridays. And in Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever memorises the first ten verses of Surah Al-Kahf will be protected from the Dajjal.
The four stories, in simple words

| Verses | Story | Lesson for children |
|---|---|---|
| 9–26 | The people of the cave. Young believers hide in a cave to protect their faith, and Allah makes them sleep for 309 years. | Hold on to your faith, even when it is hard. |
| 32–44 | The man with two gardens. A rich man boasts about his gardens and forgets Allah, until they are destroyed. | Everything we have is from Allah; be thankful, not proud. |
| 60–82 | Musa and Al-Khidr. Prophet Musa travels to learn from a wise servant of Allah, whose actions seem strange until he explains them. | Allah knows what we cannot see; be patient. |
| 83–98 | Dhul-Qarnayn. A just and powerful king travels east and west and builds a great wall to protect people. | Use your strength to help others, and thank Allah for it. |
Between the stories, the surah talks about this world being a test, and the Day of Judgement.
Making it a Friday habit
- Split it up. At around 11 to 12 pages in the 15-line mushaf, it is a lot for a young reader in one go. Read a story each Friday, or a few pages after each prayer.
- Read together. A parent reads, the child follows with a finger, then they swap.
- Talk about one story. Ask your child what they learned from it.
Memorising the first ten verses

The first ten verses are a realistic Hifz goal even for younger children who read fluently. At two verses a day, they take about a week. Watch for the saktah (a tiny pause without breath) after the word *'iwajā* at the end of verse 1 in the Hafs recitation; our guide to waqf signs explains it.
