The short answer: Surah Ar-Rahman ("The Most Merciful") is the 55th surah of the Quran, with 78 verses, in the 27th juz. It lists Allah's blessings, from the sun and moon to fruit, seas and pearls, and keeps asking one question, repeated 31 times: *Fa-bi-ayyi ala'i Rabbikuma tukadhdhiban*, "So which of the favours of your Lord would you deny?" It is addressed to both humans and jinn.
The repeated verse
The question comes after each group of blessings, like a refrain. Children pick it up quickly, which makes Ar-Rahman an encouraging surah to memorise: once they know the refrain, almost a third of the verses are already learned. It is a lovely way to teach gratitude: after each blessing, ask your child to name one of their own.
What it is about, in simple words

| Verses | Theme |
|---|---|
| 1–13 | The Most Merciful taught the Quran, created people and taught them to speak. The sun and moon, the stars and trees, the sky and the balance of justice. |
| 14–25 | People created from clay and jinn from fire. Two seas that meet but do not mix, pearls and coral, and ships like mountains. |
| 26–30 | Everything on earth will pass away, and only Allah remains. |
| 31–45 | The Day of Judgement, when no one can escape. |
| 46–61 | Two gardens for those who feared standing before their Lord, with fruit, flowing springs and great reward. |
| 62–78 | Two more gardens, and the surah ends by blessing the name of Allah, Lord of Majesty and Honour. |
A simple plan to memorise it
Because of the refrain, the verses are short and the pattern is clear. Learn the groups of verses between each refrain one at a time:
- Start with verses 1–13, a natural first block that ends with the first refrain.
- Then learn one block between refrains each day or two.
- Keep reciting all the blocks learned so far once a day, so the order stays fixed.
Most fluent readers can memorise it in three to six weeks at this pace.
Tajweed points to watch

- Keeping count of the refrain. The most common mistake is repeating the refrain in the wrong place or skipping one. Learn which blessing comes before each refrain.
- Madd before the refrain's end. The word تُكَذِّبَانِ ends many verses; when stopping, the madd before the last letter can be 2, 4 or 6 counts. See types of madd.
- Similar gardens passages. Verses 46–61 and 62–78 sound alike. Practise them side by side once both are learned.
