About this course

The Ijazah Program prepares qualified students to earn an Ijazah, a traditional certificate authorising them to recite and teach the Quran, granted after reciting the entire Quran to a teacher who holds a sanad, an unbroken chain of transmission. Two tracks are offered: Ijazah in recitation from the mushaf with tajweed, and Ijazah in hifz for students reciting from memory.

The heart of the program is simple and demanding: the student recites, and the teacher listens with complete attention, holding every verse to the standard of the transmission. Sessions are strictly one-on-one, because an examiner cannot certify what they have not personally heard. Alongside recitation, students review the tajweed rule system and the etiquette and responsibilities that come with holding an Ijazah.

Candidates begin with an entrance assessment, then follow a recitation schedule that typically covers the full mushaf over one to two years. When the final review is complete, the teacher grants the Ijazah documenting the student's name within the chain of transmission, a certification recognised across the traditional Quran-teaching world.

Course FAQs

What exactly is an Ijazah and why does it matter?

An Ijazah is a traditional certificate stating that a qualified teacher has heard your complete recitation and authorises you to recite and teach it onward. It matters because it connects your recitation, person by person, through an unbroken chain back to the Prophet, preserving accuracy across generations.

How long does it take to complete an Ijazah online?

Most candidates finish in one to two years, depending on class frequency and how much correction their recitation needs. The full Quran must be heard verse by verse, so the timeline scales directly with how many sessions you attend each week and the consistency of your preparation.

Who will examine me, and do they really hold a sanad?

Your examiner is a teacher holding a verified sanad in the transmission you are certifying, most commonly Hafs 'an 'Aasim. Their chain documentation is shared with you at the start of the program, and your certificate names the chain you join upon completion.

Can I attempt the Ijazah if I have not memorised the whole Quran?

Yes, through the recitation track, where you recite from the mushaf rather than from memory. It certifies your tajweed-accurate recitation and authorises you to teach reading. The hifz track, which certifies memorization, is reserved for students who have completed full hifz.
