The Holy Quran is the Book of Allah revealed upon Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ through Angel Jibraiel a.s which was revealed almost 1400 years ago in a time span of 22 years. At the time of Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ there was no paper to write down the Quranic verses so in order to preserve the word of Allah people used to write them on leaves or camel bones and memorize them by heart. They also memorized verses that were recited during the prayers and taught by the Sahaba r.a to other people.

THE EXCELLENCE OF A HAFIZ E QURAN:

Memorizing the Holy Quran is an act of worship; Anyone who wishes to learn the Quran should keep in mind that this act should be done solely for pleasing Allah and receiving His blessings not for worldy desires.
The excellence of a Hafiz e Quran has been established in many Hadith of the Holy Prophet ﷺ. The great Muhaddith Ali Mutaqqi Hindi has recorded a hadith in Kanz al Amal about the superiority of the Hafiz of the Holy Quran:

The hafiz of the holy Quran is the standard bearer of Islam. Whoever respects a hafiz undoubtedly respects Allah. Allah’s curse is on those who disrespect a hafiz.

[Kanz al Amal – 2294] There is another hadith in Musnad Ahmad:

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amar narrates from the Holy Prophet ﷺ that he ﷺ said: It will be told to a Hafiz of the Holy Quran that keep reciting the Holy Quran and keep ascending the stations of Jannah. Recite with Tarteel (slowly, following the rules of recitation) the way you recited in the World, because you final station (of Jannah) will be where you were when you recite the last verse of the Holy Quran.

[Musnad Ahmad – 6508]

THE PRIVILEGES OF A HAFIZ E QURAN

Allah has given special privileges, to the one who learns the Holy Quran, in a number of ways in this World and the Hereafter:

1.   PRECEDENCE OVER OTHER IN LEADING PRAYERS:

It was narrated that Abu-Masood Al-Ansari said:

Hazrat Muhammad said: ‘The people should be lead in prayer by the one among them who has the most knowledge of the Book of Allah; if they are equal in knowledge of the Quran, then by one who has most knowledge of the Sunnah; If they are equal in the knowledge of Sunnah, then by the one who migrated first; if they are equal in terms of Hijrah, then by the one who became Muslim first.

[Muslim-673] It was narrated that Abdallah ibne Umar said:

When the first muhajiroon (immigrants) came to Quba, before the Messenger of Allah came, Salim, the freed slave of Abu Huzaifah used to lead them in prayer, and he was the one who knew the most Quran.

[Al-Bukhari – 660]

2.   WHEN PLACED IN A COMMON GRAVE, A HAFIZ E QURAN IS PLACED IN FRONT OF OTHERS:

When a Hafiz e Quran is to be placed in a common grave, with other people (ijtamai qabar) he should be placed in front of the other i.e. the closest to the Qibla.

It is narrated that Jaabar ibne Abdallah said:

The Prophet ﷺ would wrap two of the men, slayed at Uhud, in a single cloth, then he would ask “which of them knew the more Quran?” If one of them was pointed out to him, he would put that one in the grave first. And he said “I will be a witness over these people on the day of resurrection”. He commanded that they should be buried with their blood, without being washed, and that no funeral prayer should be offered for them.

[Al-Bukhari – 1278]

3.   PRECEDENCE IN LEADERSHIP:

Ammar ibne Waathila narrated that

Naafi ibne Abd al-Harith met Umar ibne Usfan and Umar had appointed him as governor of Makkah. Umar said ‘Who have you appointed in charge of the people of the valley?’ He said ‘Ibn Abza’ Umar asked ‘Who is Ibn Abza?’  He said, ‘He is well versed in the slaves’ Umar said, ‘Have you appointed over them a freed slave?!’ He said, ‘He is well-versed in the Book of Allah and he has knowledge of the laws of inheritance.’ ‘Umar said: ‘Your Prophet said: ‘Indeed, by this Book, Allah would exalt some people and degrade others.’

[Muslim – 817]

4.       HE WILL BE WITH THE ANGELS:

It is narrated from Aisha r.a that the Prophet ﷺ said:

The one who recites the Quran and learns it by heart, will be with the noble righteous scribes (in heaven) and the one who exerts himself to learn Quran by heart and recites it with great difficulty will have a double reward.

[Al-Bukhari-4653, Muslim-798]

5.   THE QURAN WILL INTERCEDE FOR HIM WITH ALLAH:

It was narrated that Abu Umaamah Al Bahili said:

I heard the Messenger of Allah say, ‘Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection to intercede for its companions. Recite the two bright ones, Al-Baqarah and Surah Aal e Imran, for they will come on the Day of Resurrection like two clouds or two shades or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqarah for to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.

[Muslim-804]

PRACTICING THE QURAN:

Having memorized the Holy Quran one should make it a habit to recite the Quran daily in order to keep fresh in his mind the verses that he has learned because the One who learns the Quran but doesn’t practice it on a regular basis forgets the verses which becomes the cause of Allah’s anger towards him.

A famous riwaayat mentioned in Mishkaat is of two angels taking Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ on a journey and showing him different incidents. Thereafter, revealing their interpretations. One of the incidents was of a person who was lying on the ground and another picking up a boulder and crushing his head, after which the boulder rolled away. By the time the man went to pick up the boulder and returned, the crushed person’s head had returned to its original state and he repeated this action and punishment. Allah prescribed this punishment for such a person who was neglectful of reciting the Quran.

Although the punishment for neglecting and forgetting the Quran is so severe, this does not mean that one should stay away from this beautiful act due to its punishments as Muslims it is our responsibility to educate, teach and propagate Islam whether the recipient practices upon it or not, our responsibility is to propag/ate and their responsibility is to learn and practice upon it.
